08/2022: Dr. Hang Xu (now Prof. Hang Xu) left the group and joins the Concordia University (Canada) as Assistant Professor. Many congrats, Hang!

05/2022: Hearty Congratulations to Dr. Chen and Dr. Ale Piglione for being awarded the Matthew Prize and the Constance Fligg Tipper award for the excellent PhD theses.

07/2021: Well done to Chen and Jump for a nice study that reveals the origin of strengthening found in polycrystal-like architected materials. New insights published in Nature Communications can help to design lightweight materials with high strength & ability to control the spatial deformation.

Nice collection of studies in metals in Nature Communications (https://www.nature.com/ncomms/collections) that includes our recent study: https://www.nature.com/articles/s41467-020-14453-3. Beautiful & intriguing image of crystal microstructure in a 3D printed alloy taken by Bogdan is featured to represent the collection. The image is strikingly similar to an artwork “ Squares with concentric circles” painted by Kandinsky.

Jan 2020. One of our studies was accepted for publication in Nature Communications. The study reveals the influential role of cell side-branching and explain the microstructure development in 3D printing of alloys via powder-bed fusion. The open-access article can be found at: https://www.nature.com/articles/s41467-020-14453-3. The study is a highly cited paper according to WoS.

08/2019: Our paper Damage-tolerant architected materials inspired by crystal microstructure, Nature, 565, 305-311 (2019) is a highly cited publication on the web of science

04/2019: Our study on the crystal plastic anisotropy of TiAl alloy led by Dr. Liu Chen in collaboration with a close colleague Prof. Dunne at Imperial and with Prof. Clegg's team at University of Cambridge is published in Int J. of Plasticity https://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/pii/S0749641919300026

03/2019: Dr. Pham was recently awarded a competitive grant: Excellent Funds for Frontier Research that supports breakthrough research in the next 3 years at Imperial.

01/2019: Our groundbreaking study - Damage-tolerant architected materials inspired by crystal microstructure, Nature, 565, 305-311 (2019) presents a transformative approach to combine the science of metals with 3D printing to generate meta-materials with desired properties that opens a new frontier of research, and holds great potential for a variety of applications. The study has been highlighted by Nature's Editorial - 3D printing mimics metals and by Expert's Analysis in Nature's issue #7739. An editor of Nature Communications also offers their thoughts on this groundbreaking study. The study is featured in > 10 media channels (in English, Dutch, Korean): Physics World, Chemical & Engineering News, Dutch Newspaper NRC, Science News, TechXplore, EurekAlert, Nature Korea, & many more

Fantastic news: Our proposal submitted to EPSRC Feasibility Studies is selected for funding. Time to do fun things that combine machine learning and Calphad to search for printable alloys.

Dr. Pham will present an invited talk on criteria for alloy selection for additive manufacturing with a focus on high entropy alloys at Thermec - https://thermec2018.sciencesconf.org, session H4 Room C/D,  3:30pm Tuesday 10/07.

Our paper in printability of a high entropy alloy led by Ale (1st year PhD student) and co-authored with a close colleague (Dr. Gourlay) has attracted quite good attention from communities in the past 90 days: https://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/pii/S0167577X18306463
